About SIA’s Ski-a-thon

In conjunction with SNO!zone and Xscape Milton Keynes, on 12th September 2009 the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) will be holding the UK’s first ever indoor, real snow ski-a-thon.

Taking part on the day we already have the Atomic ski teams which include:

Eight-times British ski champion Graham Bell, a well-known face from presenting the BBCs Ski Sunday, will grace the slopes, being one of the best skiers the UK has ever known. Graham’s passion for skiing has been displayed through his motivating, coaching and encouraging of young people to get involved in the sport. In 1999 he was appointed as Performance Director at the British Ski and Snowboard Federation.

Ed Drake, British Alpine ski champion, who has qualified to compete in the Winter Olympics next year. Since becoming British Junior Champion in the 2004/05 season Ed’s star performances have continued, ending last season by picking up the British Super-G and Giant Slalom titles, as well as winning the Overall British title.

James Webb Britain’s number one Freeskier and member of the British World Cup team for ½ pipe and Slopestyle.

Talan Skeels-Piggins World number 5 downhill sit ski and member of British Disabled Ski Team.

Prizes, Auction Lots and Incentives

Team Leader who’s team raises the most sponsorship will win a double room B&B for a week in January at austrian-alps.com.

Individuals who do not ski or board that put together a team will be put into a prize draw to win a spa day for two people at Fawsley Hall.

Other prizes and auction lots include:

Accomodation in Val d’ isere in April courtesy of the Base Camp Group

A brand new pair of Atomic ski’s or a snowboard,

Atomic ski/board boots,

Dinner for 2 at Olivier’s at the Inn at Woburn

Corporate day for 4 people at Ranksboro Polo Club

Ski time with the Ghanan Ski team at Hemel Hempstead

Luggage sets, meals for two, ski and leisure clothing

Goody bags for all participants

Participants will also be fully fed with 2 meals, snacks and watered throughout the day.

All participants will also be highly entertained with Live Music, Wii competitions, a treasure hunt for all ages and a wide variety of other activities.

How to Join SIA in this Fantastic Challenge

The logistics of this event are that tag teams of between 2 " 6 people must ensure that one member from each team is on the slope at all times over a 12 hour period. The event will start with an information and warm up session at 8.30am with the first skiers or boarders taking to the slope at 9am through to 9pm. Teams will be given the opportunity to change their team member on the slope at hourly intervals. Teams have been asked to aim to raise £800 sponsorship per team. During the current climate we feel this is an achievable target, especially for a team of 6 people, who would need to raise just £120 plus gift aid each, which equates to asking 12 people to donate just £10 each.

We will be encouraging disabled skiers to take part in the challenge and have formed strong links with Adaptive SnowSports Milton Keynes; who will be both entering teams and demonstrating a range of adaptive ski equipment on the day. A team from the Paralympics development squad will also be entering the challenge, giving participants the opportunity to ski with the sports stars of tomorrow!

Ideally we would like you to put a team together of friends or colleagues, however, if you wish to participate but need more people for your team we have a spreadsheet of participants in the same situation. So please let us know and we will put you in touch.

2009 will be SIA’s 35th anniversary, as part of those celebrations our aim is to not only introduce a range of new fundraising initiatives such as the Ski-a-thon, but also to ensure through media involvement that SIA is firmly placed on the map as a recognised national charity.
