English Alpine Championships 2009 – Bormio. Report Day 4

English Alpine Championships 2009 " Bormio

Tuesday 17.2.09 " FIS Super G

The weather today changed to a mix of low cloud and light snow. Visibility was acceptable although the light was flat and this meant that copious amounts of blue dye were sprayed onto the piste so that racers could see the line.

The piste was softer than in the earlier days but was still in excellent condition and allowed both males and females to ski the same line with little need to slip.

Once again the race was well subscribed with the male event being almost full with 135 racers. The Super G course was challenging and included three jumps. Most European countries were represented and competitors came from as far afield as Japan and the USA.

The ladies event was won by the Czech Republic with runners up from Switzerland and the USA

Tuesday 17.2.09 Minis Giant Slalom

This is the first of our Mini races, this one being supported by Slalom Plus who have provided new trophies for the event. The weather was misty with low cloud and light snow but this, in no way, prevented the racers from participating with their usual zeal and excitement.

The snow had softened slightly from the icy conditions seen for the earlier FIS Super G which resulted in a firm piste that allowed the racers to turn where they needed.

The start was from the same area that will be used in the Children’s slalom later this week and finished in the stadium. This allowed almost the entire race to be seen from the finish with only a small period when racers disappeared from view in a fold in the ground. There was voluble encouragement for all competitors from those in the finish area.

The podium at prize giving on Friday will be filled by the following racers:

Girls

1st Megan Jenkins

2nd Jessica Anderson

3rd Helen Todd- Saunders

Boys

1st Iain Innes

2nd Nathan Breese

3rd James Shaw
